Working with the Russian Language
Having your words translated
from English into Russian obviously plays a major part in establishing
a business presence within the Russian market. However, in order
to fully capitalise on this step, you will need to be in control
of how those words are administered throughout your business structure.
For example, if you wish to print
out a Russian sales letter, will your printer recognise the Cyrillic
symbols? What if you need to edit or change a Russian presentation?
What if your computer will not display the Cyrillic text? Where
can you find a Cyrillic keyboard?
There are two ways of dealing
with these situations. One is to contract out all of the Word
Processing and formatting work to a company with the specialist
knowledge to deal with such complications, and the other is to
adapt your hardware and software programmes to incorporate Cyrillic
into your working environment.
Adapting to Cyrillic
If you decide to adapt your systems to include the Russian language
you will need to alter some of your computer settings, upload various
Cyrillic fonts and purchase a Russian
keyboard to be used when typing.
Computer
settings are pretty straightforward to adjust, but are necessary
in overcoming many of the viewing difficulties. One of the most
common problems encountered when working with Russian is when
an email or file arrives from a Russian contact and your software
cannot recognise the Cyrillic characters. What do you do?
Some basic steps:
Viewing Cyrillic in Windows:
If you wish to view Russian (Cyrillic), first follow these steps:
STEP 1. Click on "My Computer,"
then "Control Panel," and then "Add/Remove Programs."
STEP 2. Select the "Windows Set Up" tab and scroll down
to the language support selection.
STEP 3. Once you find the correct selection, click and chose the
Cyrillic option.
STEP 4. You may have to put in the Windows CD-ROM or disks. Windows
will spin, and then you will have to re-boot.
Viewing Cyrillic on the Web
For Internet Explorer, Under the "View" menu, chose "Encoding,"
then chose "Cyrillic".
Viewing Cyrillic in Documents>
STEP 1. Install some Cyrillic
fonts. You will also need a Cyrillic keyboard if you want to type.
STEP 2. Load the document into the appropriate program, such as
Microsoft Word or Corel's WordPerfect.
STEP 3. If necessary, highlight the text and change the font from
the default in the software to an appropriate Cyrillic font that
you have downloaded and installed.
